Introduction

Matt picked this up for me when he went to the grocery store and I think the intention was to mess with me, since he hates coffee. However, I LOVE coffee and haven’t had a Java Monster in a long time so I’m actually really hype. Plus, I feel like the java aspect gives me the leeway to drink this in the morning. Let’s get it.

Taste

7.75

I always have weird expectations going into a first-time drink review, probably stemming from having tried so many different energy drinks, and this is no exception to that rule. I’ve had the other various Java Monsters before, and my one issue with them was always that they were way too sweet.

I’m a guy who drinks his hot or iced coffee black, and my favorite morning drink is an Americano, so I admit that this may not be a popular opinion. For those who love cream and sugar, you’re probably a fan of those original Java Monsters.

This was a great change of pace, though. I don’t have much experience with oat milk but you absolutely can taste the oat aftertaste. And just off the top of my head I would say this is about half as sweet as the standard Java Monsters. It’s smooth and doesn’t make me cringe from the sweetness after it goes down.

Appearance

7

I’m going to give this a 7.75 because although there’s a lot going on, I mess with the color scheme and it’s obviously unique, making it stand out among the original monster (green & black) copycats.

If the farmers on the can are a play on “American Gothic”, that’s pretty funny. And I don’t know if you’d consider this in Look but the description on the back of the can pokes fun at vegans which gave me a chuckle as well.

It pours out light brown with no carbonation.

Kick

7.75

I was expecting the standard 140 or 160 from Monster so seeing the caffeine at 200mg was a surprise. I would feel weird drinking this right when I wake up as a substitute for coffee, but I can see taking this on a road trip or bringing it into work as an early afternoon pick-me-up.

Conclusion

Vegan or not, Java Monster Oatmilk will satisfy you with its 200mg of caffeine, smooth oat aftertaste, and coffee flavor that is strong and not too sweet. Monster keeps pumping out new drinks like it’s a numbers game, and if the quality is consistently this good then I can’t complain.
